Alopecia

What Is Alopecia ?

People who suffer from alopecia areata experience clumps the size of quarters falling out of their hair. Hair loss can vary in intensity from person to person. In some cases, just a few spots fall out. Some people have suffered a setback. They may be able to grow back hair, but it will eventually fall out again. Others recover their hair completely. Many types of alopecia areata exist. The most common form is called alopecia areata, but others also exist. There are many treatments available to treat Alopecia.

What causes Alopecia ?

Hair follicles shrink due to an immune response that attacks and destroys their cells, causing hair production to decrease drastically. It is unknown what causes the immune system to attack hair follicles in this way. The cause of these changes is unknown, but genetics may be involved since the condition is more likely to be diagnosed in a person with a close family member who also has alopecia areata. In addition to alopecia areata, an estimated one in five people who have it have a close relative with the disease. Researchers have also discovered that those with family history have a history of atopy, hyper asthma and thyroiditis. Despite its widespread belief, there is little scientific evidence to back the theory that alopecia areata is caused by stress. Although stress can trigger the condition, most evidence points to a genetic origin.
